Joseph Holmes Obituary

Joseph W. Holmes, age 91 of Brecksville, OH passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 5, 2021. Beloved husband of Ruth for 66 years; Loving father of Jeffrey Holmes (Mary Lou) and Lynne Work (Andy); Dearest grandfather of Jennifer, Elizabeth, Christopher, Amanda and Krissy and great grandfather of Penelope,  Dear brother of Dallas "Tex" (deceased) Holmes (Joanne).

Joe graduated from Crafton High School in Pennsylvania and went to Penn State University where he received his mechanical engineering degree.  Joe was a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force serving at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base during the Korean War.  He started his career with Carrier Air Conditioning Corporation in Philadelphia and married Ruth after meeting her at his brothers wedding.  After receiving an MBA from Duquesne University he became a Registered Professional Engineer. Despite his busy schedule, he always made time for family.  Together they enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting and took several adventurous road trips out west.

Joe was very involved in Kiwanis.  He joined in 1981 and held various jobs and became President for the 1996-1997 year.  He helped the club build handicapped ramps at several homes and the therapeutic rider ramp at the Brecksville Stables.  He regularly helped with the Santa Delivery program, Baskets of Hope, Easter Egg Hunt and others.  During this time he was the mainstay of Kiwanis efforts to sell boxes at the horse show encouraging everyone to fill the entire ring.  Joe enjoyed being a grandfather and great grandfather and spent countless hours attending birthday parties, dance recitals, sporting events and other family and holiday celebrations.  Each grandchild enjoyed spending a week alone each summer with Grandpa and Grandma doing their favorite things.

Joe also volunteered as an appointment driver and substitute meals on wheels driver for Brecksville Human Resources and Red Coat usher at The Playhouse Square.  He was a trustee and committee member at the Brecksville Methodist Church.  Joe was honored as the Senior Volunteer of the Year in 2008.  He enjoyed playing golf, tennis and bowling.
