James Flanagan Obituary

JAMES W. FLANAGAN, age 74, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2021.  Beloved husband of Nora J. (nee Seiwert) for 51 years.  Loving father of Kristen Flanagan (Andrew Shinkle) and Meghan Ghetti (Sante).  Cherished grandfather of Emilia and Charlotte Ghetti and Joseph Shinkle. Dear brother of Dolores Dadik (Robert), the late Kathleen Seiwert (James), Joan (Eugene), Michael (Bill), Thomas (Tamara) and Maureen. Dear Uncle of many.

Jim was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam Era and an avid boater.
He co-owned a successful business, State Pattern Company, and worked at Babcock and Wilcox as Foundry Manager. He was proud of his work building nuclear reactors for Navy Submarines and boilers for generating electricity. He holds a patent through Babcock and Wilcox, granted in 1999.

Jim loved to work hard and play hard. He is infamous for buying his first boat before he bought Nora an engagement ring, which came shortly thereafter. He spent every summer at a dock at Put-in-Bay, eventually moving to Cedar Point Marina where he made lifelong friends and served as Commodore of the Point Yacht Club in 2008.  He was a skilled captain and had a reputation for being able to dock any boat. He taught his daughters how to pilot the boat, tie/throw lines, and jet ski.  Summers were filled with adventures to the Lake Erie islands, good food, good drinks and good friends.

Jim was loyal and protective of his family.  He was always thinking one step ahead to take care of them. He was the Dad who would slip you a twenty in college or take your car out while you were sleeping to fill it with gas. He ALWAYS paid for dinner. It became a family competition to see who could get the check first. It was nearly always him, as he would arrive at the restaurant twenty minutes early just to tell the waitress he was paying.

Jim adored his grandchildren. They made this strong and generally tough man melt. He constantly spoiled them by sneaking them money and Reese's cups. He loved to hold them on his lap and always had time for snuggles with his grandkids.

To those who were close to him, they know he was sensitive and caring with the most generous heart. Jim will be dearly missed by his family and they are grateful for the love, guidance, and legacy he created.
