Dennis Norman Obituary

DENNIS O. NORMAN, age 79.  Beloved husband of Linda (nee Kufta).  Loving and proud father of Suzanne (Matt Bittner), Michael (Colette Conway), Michelle (Tim) Watson, Christopher (Kathleen), Gregory (Jennifer) Vazquez-Norman, Patrick, Nicholas, and Lindsey.  Loving grandfather of Katie, Lauren, Finnbar, Joseph, Taylor, Lily, May, Peter, Porter, Viktor, and Francesca.  Devoted brother of Robert (Connie), Beth (Chuck) Allison, and Jeanne Seitz.

Born to Mearl and Ann, Dennis was raised in Akron, Ohio. He had the hands of a surgeon but the soul of an artist, a combination that earned him a full-tuition scholarship to art school. Upon realizing that a career in the arts wouldn't allow him to pursue his fervent desire to raise a family, he turned instead to law, where he became the first editor of the Akron Law Review before going on to a long career as an attorney in private practice. He argued cases before the Supreme Court of Ohio that resulted in new legislation, but his proudest professional achievements were the families he helped to create by facilitating a great many adoptions through Lutheran Children's Aid as well as his practice.

A child of World War II, Dennis was a history buff and avid aviation enthusiast. When his father returned from the Pacific Theatre they built and flew model airplanes together, sparking a lifelong passion for the hobby. He would become a master modeler, a longtime columnist for Model Aviation magazine, and a pioneering pillar of the model building community, renowned for his ambition and the exquisite attention to detail that he used to turn simple balsa wood and tissue paper into hulking scale replicas of bombers the likes of which had never been seen-or flown-before.

Beyond his favorite pastime of model building, Dennis' artistry shone through beautiful sculptures, chalk and pencil drawings, and award-winning acrylic paintings that hung in museums. For all his countless awards and accolades, the thing he was most proud of in life was the robust family for which he cared so deeply. He was blessed with eight children and eleven grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. A man of habit and routine, none were more enduring or unfailing than the pride and joy he felt for his kin. He loved each of them dearly and was never more happy than when they were near.
